Code Grey Training

Code Grey traditionally refers to a combative person without a weapon in US hospitals — but at some facilities, it’s used to signal an active shooter instead, following guidance the Joint Commission issued in 2010. Because of this split, it’s especially important that your team’s training reflects exactly how your organization defines and activates a Code Grey response.

No two facilities handle Code Grey identically, and that’s exactly why we don’t offer a one-size-fits-all program. Resolution Education’s approach is built around BERT Training (Behavioral Emergency Response Teams) — a flexible framework we adapt to whichever definition, policy and activation process your organization actually uses.

Escalating incidents in healthcare and other high-contact workplaces are becoming more frequent, and staff need more than a general awareness of “what to do” — they need rehearsed, team-based responses they can rely on under pressure.

We start by understanding your existing Code Grey policy — combative patient, active threat, or otherwise — and build the training around it, rather than asking your team to learn generic terminology that doesn’t match what they’ll actually hear over the intercom.

Sessions combine practical de-escalation skills with team coordination: who takes the lead, how roles are assigned on the spot, and how to keep both staff and patients safe while a Code Grey unfolds. We also cover when and how to use duress alarms correctly within your facility’s procedures.

Throughout the course, participants work through realistic scenarios and hands-on demonstrations rather than sitting through theory alone, so the training translates directly into confidence on the floor.
